Frisco Hiking

There is a wonderful system of scenic hiking trails surrounding Summit County. Hiking is a great way to explore and discover the region. Choose a guide and learn the history of the area, see points of interest and understand the geological factors that created this unique and beautiful area. Another great source for trail information is the U.S. Forest Service. With a broad number of trails to choose from, there is something for every hiker in Summit County. From gentle-grade wanders through the woods to the challenging summit of a 14,000-foot peak, the world is your oyster as a hiker in the Rockies. Consider your fitness and comfort level with exertion before you hit the trail: at this altitude, dramatic increase in elevation will be challenging and will, literally, take your breath away. Plan to leave early in the morning, to avoid afternoon thunderstorms (though typically brief) that can hamper your descent. Be sure to check with the US Forest Service for restrictions due to migration, fire danger or other reasons. Additional notes: If you plan a longer hike or around water sources, look for waterproof "Gore-Tex" boots. Ankle support is essential when navigating high-terrain boulder fields, a properly constructed and fitted boot can prevent a sprain. For more leisurely trails, try a sturdy running shoe or a sneaker/hiking boot hybrid.
